“Major the Polar Bear” Scholarship

This scholarship was established in partnership with Stoneham Savings Bank to honor “Major the Polar Bear” of Stone Zoo fame. At the time of his death, Major was the oldest known polar bear in captivity at 33 years old. He was the “poster bear” that galvanized the community to successfully fight for the re-opening of the zoo after its brief closure in the early 1990s. Students applying for this scholarship should be focused in an animal or environmental field, such as zoology, environmental science, veterinary, etc.

Future Educators Scholarship

The scholarship originated as a way to honor the mission of the National Coalition for Educational and Cultural Programs, which began as an organization focused on early childhood education. Students interested in this scholarship must be focused on a career within the education field (at any level) and should be involved in some form of community service.
